This spring GAiN decided to shift the focus of our help for refugees from Serbia to Greece. The refugee stream to the Balkan has stopped because of the closed border between Greece and Macedonia, but people are still coming to Greece. Many people stay in the unofficial refugee camp Idomeni. About 16.000 refugees have been staying here for months. Since last April GAiN organizes mission trips to this area.
In Thessaloniki we cooperate with a local church and with our colleagues of Agapè Greece. GAiN helps with distributing goods, children’s ministry and encouraging the refugees that live in the camps near the Macedonian border. The living conditions are poor; people live in tents in the mud, lacking food and hygiene. Also, there are many children that are ill and, most importantly, they lack the vision of a hopeful future.
Transport and mission trip
A few weeks ago the first GAiN transport with relief goods like food, baby food, hygiene materials and clothes arrived in Greece, but a lot more is needed. GAiN started the mission trips to help local organizations with helping the refugees. We aim to encourage people and listen to their stories.
The first mission trip took place in April. It was a very impressive trip. In the meantime, things are changing. All the refugees now need to leave the unofficial camps around Idomeni and are asked to go to the Hotspots. These are refugee camps that are organized by the government. We have permission to help in the hotspots too, because of our local partners. We will continue our monthly mission trips as long as help is needed. The next mission trips are planned for:
– 27 June – 4 July
– 1 – 8 August (COMPLETE)
– 19 – 26 September
– 17 – 24 October
The price for a mission trip is € 300,- including transfers, accommodation and food, but excluding the flight. A flight ticket costs approximately € 150,-. Participants for this mission trip need to be 17 years or older. You can apply for this mission trip via the application form.
